José Carlos Pinto breaks Portugal's 10-kilometer record

José Carlos Pinto broke Portugal's 10-kilometer record today, winning the race in Hole, Norway, in 27.53 minutes, the first Portuguese record under 28 minutes.

Pinto, a 1,500-meter specialist who ran in the semi-finals of the recent Tokyo World Championships, triumphed at Hytteplanmila 2025, ahead of Norwegians Narve Gilje Nordås (28.25) and Vegard Vesterhaug Warnes (28.28), who completed the podium.

"The goal was achieved. I'm training well, all the indicators showed that I was at my best, and I approached this race with the intention of breaking the national record. I confirmed right from the first kilometer that I was fast, I passed the fifth kilometer in 14.03, I was already in the lead and managed to do a 'negative split' [second half of the race faster than the first], of 13.50", said the Portuguese long-distance runner at the end of the race.

The 10-kilometer road race has already seen three record holders this year: first, Isaac Nader, who ran at the Nationals in January in 28.01, then Samuel Barata, who ran in Brasov in 28.00, on the 5th, and now José Carlos Pinto.
