Tumors were the main cause of death in Madeira in 2023

Malignant tumors were the main cause of death in the age groups between 30 and 74 years old in Madeira in 2023, the Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM) indicated this Tuesday, stating that the total number of deaths was 2,791.
“Among adults aged 25 to 64, there were 514 deaths, mainly due to malignant tumors (neoplasms) (182 deaths), diseases of the circulatory system (107 deaths) and external causes of injury and poisoning (59 deaths),” explains the regional authority.
In the 65 to 84 age group, 1,252 deaths were recorded, with emphasis also on malignant tumors” (339 deaths), diseases of the circulatory system (313 deaths, 102 of which were due to ischemic heart disease) and diseases of the respiratory system (186 deaths, including 94 due to pneumonia).
The DREM indicates that among the 1,010 deaths among people aged 85 and over, 298 were caused by circulatory system diseases and 200 by respiratory system diseases, of which 114 were attributed to pneumonia.
In total, in 2023, there were 2,791 deaths of residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents a decrease of 10.1% compared to 2022 (3,104 deaths).
Of these deaths, 1,369 were male (49.1%) and 1,422 were female (50.9%), meaning the male-to-female death ratio was 96.3 male deaths for every 100 female deaths, a lower figure than that recorded nationally, of 100.4.
In the year under analysis, the mortality rate per 1,000 inhabitants in Madeira was 10.9 (11.2 in the country).
By age group, the death of one child under 1 year of age was recorded, corresponding to an infant mortality rate of 0.6 (1.7 in 2022), with the cause of death being “some conditions originating in the perinatal period”.
There were also four deaths of children between 1 and 14 years old, two of which were due to “malignant tumors (neoplasms).
In the group of young people aged 15 to 24, 10 deaths were recorded, with three due to transport accidents and three due to malignant tumors.
At the municipal level, and in proportional terms, Funchal recorded 1,224 deaths (43.9%), followed by Santa Cruz with 376 deaths (13.5%) and Câmara de Lobos with 266 deaths (9.5%).
According to DREM, these municipalities accounted for 66.9% of deaths in the archipelago.
On the other hand, the municipalities of Porto Santo (53 deaths; 1.9%), Porto Moniz (55 deaths; 2.0%), São Vicente (82 deaths; 2.9%) and Santana (94 deaths; 3.4%) had less than 100 deaths in 2023, totaling 10.2% of deaths.
The cause of death from diseases of the circulatory system stood out as the main one in the region (25.8% of total deaths), followed by malignant tumors (neoplasms), with 649 deaths , corresponding to 23.3% of the total.
