China defends rare earth export controls

China said on Wednesday (15) that controls imposed on rare earth exports follow international practices, despite criticism from the United States and several European countries.
The measure decided by Beijing last week led US President Donald Trump to announce additional tariffs of 100% on imports of Chinese products after months of truce in the trade war between the two largest world economies.
"China applies controls in accordance with the law to safeguard global peace and its international obligations, such as non-proliferation," said Beijing's foreign ministry spokesman, Lin Jian.
“It is also in line with international practices,” he added.
China is the world's largest producer of rare earths, which are essential for the digital, automotive, energy and weapons industries.
Rare earths are also a focus of trade disputes with the United States and tensions with the European Union.
"We are ready to strengthen dialogue and trade with all countries on export controls to maintain the security and stability of global production and supply chains," Lin said.
In April, the Asian country introduced a licensing system for certain rare earth exports, which caused tensions in supply chains.
Last week, Beijing announced new export controls on materials-related technologies, which has escalated the trade war between China and the United States.
Trump responded by announcing additional 100% tariffs on Chinese goods starting November 1, which will be in addition to the existing 30% tariffs.
The European Union announced Tuesday that it would discuss with its G7 partners a "coordinated response" to Chinese restrictions on the export of rare earth technologies.
