Mandatory castration of dogs and cats enters the STF radar

The Supreme Federal Court is analyzing a lawsuit against the Minas Gerais law that requires the neutering of purebred dogs and cats in various circumstances, including when they are bred for commercial purposes.
Minister Dias Toffoli , the case's rapporteur, ordered the Legislative Assembly and the Minas Gerais government to send information on the matter.
The action was initiated by the Brazilian Association of the Pet Products Industry and the Pet Brasil Institute. According to the organizations, the law was drafted without technical care and, instead of ensuring animal welfare, can lead to cruelty and jeopardize the preservation of certain species.
Toffoli highlighted that the rule will only come into effect in October 26th , which is why he did not consider a request for a preliminary injunction. After receiving the clarifications, the minister will forward the case to the Attorney General's Office and the Federal Prosecutor's Office, which will have five days to respond. The rapporteur may then issue a decision.

After difficult years , we've returned to a Brazil that feels at least a little bit normal. This new normal, however, remains fraught with uncertainty . The Bolsonaro threat persists, and the appetites of the market and Congress continue to pressure the government. Abroad, the global rise of the far right and the brutality in Gaza and Ukraine risk imploding the fragile foundations of global governance.
