Almost half of seniors help family members with money or expenses

Portuguese seniors are increasingly active and attentive to their financial stability, even after their pensions were increased by up to 3.9% in 2025, and the Government announced an extraordinary supplement to be paid in September.
The study by the Cetelem Senior Consumption 2025 observatory shows that 64% of seniors consider that they have a similar or "higher" income than the majority of Portuguese people and, although 47% say that their purchasing power has decreased in the last 12 months, 40% help someone with money or expenses, usually their children.
The vast majority of people over 55 are still working, as this is their main source of income.
Although seniors expect to increase their savings more than their expenses next year, on average 90% of their salary is allocated to fixed and variable expenses.
Food is the most frequently purchased and spent-on category, with most seniors making purchases in this category weekly. After food, healthcare and housing are the areas where they spend the most money.
Looking to the future, 45% of respondents said they would like to travel, and 34% wanted to renovate/remodel their homes. Twenty percent wanted to buy new electronic and technological equipment.
