The general secretary of the Socialist Party, José Luís Carneiro, considered today that the great political scrutiny that will be carried out on the tragedy of the Glória elevator, in Lisbon, will be in the local elections of October 12th.
When asked by journalists whether the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, should resign following the tragic accident in the Glória elevator in Lisbon, which killed 16 people and injured more than 20, José Luís Carneiro said that his "opinion is one that has to do with respect for the scrutiny of those who have their own election to scrutinize their Mayor of Lisbon."
"Naturally, the vote must be held. From now on, in terms of the municipal council seat and also the candidate for City Council [Alexandra Leitão], they must hold that vote. But it's a vote that will take place on October 12th. That really is the big political vote," he said.
The remaining polls, “of a civil nature, of a criminal nature”, will be carried out by “other entities that carry them out (…) in accordance with the law”, declared José Luís Carneiro.
The Glória elevator in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, killing 16 people and injuring 22.
The Glória elevator is operated by Carris, connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara, in Bairro Alto, on a 276-meter route and is very popular with tourists.
