Workers on layoff fall 38% in May for the 4th consecutive month

The number of workers on layoff fell 38.4% in May, compared to the same period last year, and fell 5.1% compared to April, to 4,731, falling for four consecutive months, according to data from Social Security.
In May, "the total number of lay-off situations with compensation (normal concession, as provided for in the Labour Code) was 4,731", according to the summary prepared by the Strategy and Planning Office (GEP) of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, released today.
Compared to the same period last year, there was a decrease of 2,946 payments processed, equivalent to a drop of 38.4%.
In the chain comparison, there was a drop of 254 processed payments, which translates into a decrease of 5.1% compared to April.
The number of workers on layoff has been falling for four consecutive months, that is, since February, after rising 77.5% in January compared to December 2024.
According to the GEP, the reduced working hours scheme covered 3,021 people, 35.8% less than in May 2024 (1,681 fewer benefits), but an increase of 0.7% (22 benefits) compared to April.
The temporary suspension regime registered a year-on-year reduction of 42.5% (1,265 fewer processings) and fell 13.9% compared to April (276 fewer processings).
In May, lay-off payments were processed for 282 employers, which represents a decrease of 195 compared to the same period last year and a decrease of 40 compared to the previous month.
Lay-off consists of the temporary reduction of normal working periods or suspension of employment contracts carried out at the initiative of companies, for a certain period of time, due to market reasons, structural or technological reasons or catastrophes or other occurrences that have seriously affected the company's normal activity.
