US President Donald Trump said on Sunday (27) that tariffs imposed on trading partners will come into effect on August 1, as planned. The tariff hike will hit Brazil with a 50% rate. The statement was made during a press conference alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland.
"August 1st is for everyone," Trump declared. The only exception is the 25% tariff on steel and aluminum, which is already in effect. The American president announced a trade agreement with the European Union. This will increase tariffs on the bloc from 30% to 15%. In recent days, the following have also managed to negotiate tariff hikes with the US: the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan.
Earlier, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had already stated that the tariffs would take effect on August 1st "with no extensions, no further grace periods." The Republican announced the tariff hike against Brazil on July 9th, claiming that the U.S. has a trade deficit with Brazil.
Shortly after the announcement, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) pointed out that statistics from the US government itself “prove a surplus between that country and Brazil in trade in goods and services of around 410 billion dollars over the last 15 years.”
In addition to presenting commercial reasons, Trump stated that the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for an alleged coup attempt also contributed to the sanction against Brazil.
