IPI Verde is now in effect and car models may see price reductions; see which ones

A new decree (nº 12.549) published this Friday (11) in the Official Gazette of the Union regulates the right to IPI Zero for “less polluting” cars. To guarantee the so-called IPI Verde, automakers must meet certain requirements. Six models were registered, according to the federal government.
The new proposal to reduce the Tax on Industrialized Products is part of the National Green Mobility and Innovation Program (Mover). It was launched by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, on Thursday (10).
Car models that must guarantee Zero IPITo be eligible for zero IPI, the vehicle must emit less carbon dioxide (CO₂) – up to 83 grams per kilometer –, be produced with more than 80% recyclable materials, be manufactured in Brazil in several stages (such as welding, painting, engine and assembly), and fall into compact categories, that is, “entry-level cars”.
After the publication of the decree , General Motors (Chevrolet), Renault, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Stellants (Fiat) sent, respectively, to the MDIC the request for accreditation of some car models for IPI Zero:
- Chevrolet;
- Renault Kwid;
- Volkswagen Polo;
- Hyundai HB20;
- Fiat Mobi;
- Fiat Argo.
After review and approval, a decree must be issued to officially determine which models are eligible for the full discount. The benefit will only be granted to vehicles that demonstrably meet all the technical and environmental criteria established by the decree.
In an interview with Rádio Bandeirantes, Alckmin said that the reduction of the IPI (Tax on Motor Vehicles) on automobiles could lower the cost of an entry-level car, costing between R$5,000 and R$10,000.
The other side of the Green IPIThe tax waiver with the green IPI must be offset by a new tax calculation for more polluting vehicles, which comes into effect in 90 days.
The decree provides for a minimum rate of 6.3% for non-entry-level passenger vehicles and from 3.9% for light commercial vehicles such as pickup trucks and vans.
Currently, these vehicles, as well as entry-level vehicles, have an IPI of 5.27%.
