EU suspends retaliatory measures against the US to negotiate by August 1

The President of the European Commission announced today that the European Union will suspend retaliatory measures against US tariffs, scheduled for Monday, with the aim of continuing negotiations with the United States until August 1.
"The United States has sent us a letter with measures that will come into effect unless there is a negotiated solution. Therefore, we are also extending the suspension of our measures until August," Ursula von der Leyen announced at a press conference in Brussels.
The German conservative politician argued that, despite keeping retaliatory measures suspended, the European Union "continues to prepare" countermeasures to "be fully prepared" if negotiations with the White House fail.
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the imposition of 30% tariffs on all European Union (EU) products, regardless of any sectoral tariffs.
Ambassadors from the 27 European Union member states will meet today in an extraordinary meeting to examine in detail the letter made public by Trump regarding customs tariffs on European countries.
On Monday, European Union trade ministers will meet in an extraordinary meeting that will also address the same topic.
