Wimbledon holds minute's silence for bombing victims

The Wimbledon tennis tournament observed a minute's silence on Monday in memory of the 52 victims of the London bombings on July 7, 2005, marking the 20th anniversary of the tragedy .

The organizers of the third Grand Slam of the season announced over the All England Club's loudspeakers that there would be a minute's silence half an hour after opening the doors to the public, calling for compliance with the measure.

The London attacks took place 20 years ago, on three London Underground trains and a bus, resulting in 56 deaths, four of which were suicide bombers, and more than 700 people injured.

It was the worst attack in UK history since Lockerbie, when a Pan Am plane exploded due to a bomb on December 21, 1988, while flying over the Scottish city, killing 259 people on board and 11 on the ground.

The 7 July London bombings took place almost simultaneously, near Aldgate, Edgware Road and Russell Square stations, while the double-decker bus bombing took place in Tavistock Square.
