' When Samba Calls' is the name of the shows with which the Brazilian musician will take to the stage at the Coliseu dos Recreios, in Lisbon, on October 29, and at the Casa da Música, in Porto, on November 1, the promoters announced in a statement.
Among the most successful themes, which he will revisit during his performances, are 'It was a river that passed through my life', 'Argument', 'Where pain has no reason' and 'Pecado Capital', among others that marked his musical career.
Throughout his nearly 60-year career, Paulinho da Viola developed a body of work based on the tradition of Brazilian popular culture, largely influenced by the musical environment in which he grew up, in the traditional neighborhood of Botafogo, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro.
From an early age, Paulinho da Viola attended musical gatherings organized by his father, the guitarist Cesar Faria, and on these occasions he was able to see musicians such as Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim in his own home.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1942, he created a body of work rooted in the traditions of samba and choro, but also marked by connections to samba schools and the musical avant-garde of the 1960s.
As the promoter recalls in a statement, throughout his career, he was distinguished on several occasions, notably with the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres decorations, awarded by the French government in 1985, and the Order of Cultural Merit, in 2001, in Brazil.
In 2016, Paulinho da Viola was invited to perform the Brazilian national anthem at the opening of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
On the international scene, the Brazilian musician and composer has performed in concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the De Doelen Hall in Rotterdam, where he was honored by the local Philharmonic Orchestra.
With scenography by Batman Zavareze, the show 'Quando o Samba Chama' celebrates decades of a career and reaffirms the vitality of samba, while Paulinho da Viola seeks to reach the audience that has followed him for a long time and new generations of listeners.
