François Bayrou moves forward with motion of confidence

French Prime Minister François Bayrou announced Monday that he will present a motion of confidence, which will be voted on in an extraordinary session of the French National Assembly on September 8. Failure to vote on this motion would result in the resignation of the executive branch, less than a year after being appointed.

Bayrou was speaking at a press conference responding to criticism of the French state's draft budget for 2026, which includes cuts that could reach 44 billion euros according to Franceinfo .

"Our country is in danger because we are on the brink of excessive debt," the Prime Minister warned, emphasizing that this vote hinges on a "central issue": "control of public finances."
