La Salette Chapel erected to give thanks for the rain

The construction of the Chapel of Our Lady of La Salette, on a hill formerly known as "Outeiro do Castro or Calvário," dates back to 1870, as stated by the Oliveira de Azeméis City Council (CMOA) on its website. At that time, according to the same source, the country was ravaged by a terrible drought, which Oliveira de Azeméis was not spared, and it also faced difficulties due to water shortages. Faced with this bleak scenario, on July 5th of that year, it was decided to hold a procession with the Holy Christ to Monte Crasto to pray for rain, which happened at the end of the religious procession. "At that moment," reports the CMOA, "it began to rain heavily, and, appearing to everyone to be a miraculous event, Abbot João José Correia dos Santos proposed the construction of a chapel on that site, dedicated to Our Lady of La Salette. The statues were ordered, and construction began. The statues arrived in 1875, remaining in the main church, and five years later, they were transferred to the chapel, which had by then been completed."
