Fires in Pedrógão Grande have already reached Sertã

Fires in Pedrógão Grande have already reached Sertã
Two fires in the parishes of Pedrógão Grande and Graça (in the municipality of Pedrógão Grande) broke out approximately one hour apart and are very close together.

The two fires currently raging in the forest in Pedrógão Grande have already reached the municipality of Sertã, with several resources being deployed in both territories to combat the fire, Civil Protection told Lusa. The Sub-regional Commander of Emergency and Civil Protection of Leiria, Carlos Guerra, told Lusa that the two fires in the parishes of Pedrógão Grande and Graça (in the municipality of Pedrógão Grande), which started about an hour apart and whose distance from each other is very short, caused projections that have already reached the neighboring municipality of Sertã, in the district of Castelo Branco. "All available resources are in the area during combat operations, and the difficulties are compounded by the wind. The second fire forced us to separate the resources in the theater of operations and reposition them," the commander stated. Carlos Guerra also revealed that resources from the fire that started in Piódão, in the municipality of Arganil, district of Coimbra, are being diverted to Pedrógão Grande, in the district of Leiria, and the projection in Sertã also led to resources from the Beira Baixa sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command being sent to the location [of the projection]. "Anyone familiar with this area [Pedrogão Grande] knows that fires pose a risk to the population, as there are always isolated and scattered villages and houses. Our concern is always the protection of people and property," he emphasized, confirming that there are "houses in the line of fire." The two fires that broke out this afternoon in Pedrógão Grande have already led to the closure of complementary route 8, between Pedrógão Grande and Pedrógão Pequeno, and of National Road 2, as well as other secondary roads, a source from the National Republican Guard told Lusa. According to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, at 5:05 pm, 391 personnel were at the first fire, supported by 100 vehicles and 17 aircraft. In the second fire, in the same municipality of Pedrógão Grande, in the parish of Graça, there are 191 operational personnel, supported by 51 vehicles and three aerial resources. With these two fires, the population of Pedrógão Grande was once again surprised by the flames today, eight years after the major fires that hit that municipality.

The fires that broke out on June 17, 2017, in Pedrógão Grande and spread to neighboring municipalities killed 66 people and injured 253 residents, seven of whom were seriously injured. The fires destroyed approximately half a thousand homes and 50 businesses.
