Bolsonaro's defense denies asylum request to Argentina

The defense of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said this Thursday that it received "with surprise" the information that he and his son Eduardo Bolsonaro were indicted for obstruction of justice and denied any request for asylum in Argentina.
In a statement released to journalists, Bolsonaro's defense also emphasized that the precautionary measures previously imposed on the former President investigated for attempted coup d'état and other crimes were complied with, a version that contradicts the Federal Police report, made public on Wednesday.
Attorney Paulo Cunha Bueno, who is part of the defense team, also told local media that Bolsonaro received an offer to apply for asylum in Argentina "more than a year and a half ago," but "didn't accept it." Bueno was referring to the document found by police on Bolsonaro's cell phone with a request for political asylum from Argentine President Javier Milei.
A Brazilian police investigation revealed that the 33-page, undated, and unsigned document requested asylum for Bolsonaro in Argentina.
The text, undated and unsigned, but addressed to the Argentine President, had been on Bolsonaro's cell phone since 2024, when he was the target of the first investigations into the coup d'état case.
The document obtained by the police was revealed with the conclusions of the investigation on Wednesday night by decision of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) judge Alexandre de Moraes, who also “ordered that the former President's defense provide clarifications, within 48 hours”, about the non-compliance with “precautionary measures, the reiteration of illicit conduct and the existence of a risk of flight”.

According to the Brazilian Federal Police investigation, the evidence found indicated that Bolsonaro, currently under house arrest, “had in his possession a document that would have enabled him to flee Brazil to Argentina, especially after the investigation began.”
In the document, the former President claims that he is being persecuted in Brazil for essentially political reasons and crimes.
These facts are included in the conclusions of the investigation against Bolsonaro and his son Eduardo Bolsonaro, for coercion by the Supreme Federal Court, with the collaboration of the United States Government, as part of the trial of an attempted coup d'état.
The two were indicted “for the crimes of coercion during the trial and attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law by restricting the exercise of constitutional powers,” the authorities added.
According to Brazilian authorities, Bolsonaro and his son Eduardo, who has been in the United States for about six months, sought to "induce, instigate and assist" the Donald Trump administration "to commit hostile acts against Brazil," with the aim of shelving the coup d'état case.
Bolsonaro faces a criminal trial on charges of leading a conspiracy to carry out a coup d'état to remain in power and prevent his successor, Lula da Silva, from taking office after losing the 2022 election.
This trial, in which he faces a possible sentence of more than 40 years in prison and which will begin on September 2, was the main reason that led the US President to impose an additional 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, as well as sanctions on several Supreme Court judges.
