Without Glory

The Glória elevator disaster, which caused so many deaths and injuries, will be the central theme of the Lisbon campaign. Carlos Moedas is undoubtedly affected, but the electorate recognizes that he could never have anticipated it. There's always a cruel side to politics: those in political power are always held accountable.
The weakened mayor of Lisbon City Council must take it upon himself to determine the reasons that led to this tragedy, also demanding accountability from the entire municipal hierarchy and Carris.
It's difficult to predict what might happen on the night of October 12th, but it's clear that this serious accident, given its scale—even if there was no one in the elevators—has weakened candidate Carlos Moedas. He will spend his campaign days being questioned about the matter, and few will listen to what he has to say about Lisbon's future.
He won't resign, obviously, but this gesture won't give his campaign any respite. The worst thing that can happen to a candidate, or several candidates on the list, is to be permanently on the defensive. We're a month away from the election, and that says everything about the ability to control damage.
