The US President has announced that the US will send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, at a time when relations between Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart are showing signs of deterioration .
"We're going to send them Patriots, which they desperately need ," Donald Trump said on Sunday, two weeks after Washington announced the suspension of some arms deliveries to Kyiv.
“I haven’t decided on the quantity yet, but they will receive them because they need protection,” he added.
The arms supply is part of an agreement with NATO, which will pay the United States for the material it will send to Ukraine, according to Trump.
"In fact, we're going to send them a lot of very sophisticated military equipment, and they're going to pay us 100 percent ," Donald Trump told the media.
The Patriots are considered one of the US military's main anti-ballistic defense systems, as they are used to intercept attacks launched by adversaries on the ground and air.
Trump also said that an announcement on Russia would be made this Monday—after weeks of expressing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin for his refusal to accept a truce and stop bombing Ukrainian territory—although he did not detail possible sanctions.
"Putin surprised a lot of people. He talks well and then bombards everyone in the afternoon . So there's a small problem, and I don't like it," he said.
Republican Senator Lindsay Graham, one of Donald Trump's closest associates, said on Sunday that this could involve a package of sanctions against Moscow.
