The premature baby of a woman who went to the emergency room without knowing she was pregnant died.

The baby was born prematurely in the early hours of Monday morning and was transferred to the Centro Materno Infantil do Norte in Porto, which has a neonatology service, where he died.

The news was reported by Jornal de Notícias, which cites a hospital source.

The 33-year-old woman from Valpaços went into labor unexpectedly and went to the private unit's permanent care service, complaining of severe lower back pain. When they realized she was pregnant, the woman claimed to have been unaware of the situation.

INEM was called, but the delivery was performed by a doctor and a nurse who were on duty at HTQ.

Mirandela firefighters were on scene, along with the SIV (Immediate Life Support) ambulance team from Mirandela's National Emergency Medical Service (INEM) and the VMER (Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle) from Macedo de Cavaleiros, who provided initial care to the newborn. He was initially transported to Vila Real Hospital and later, after being stabilized, transferred to the Centro Materno Infantil do Norte in Porto for specialized care.

The mother was also transported to the Vila Real hospital at the time and has already been discharged.

The maternity ward at Mirandela Hospital closed in 2006. In the district, only Bragança has this facility, and in the rest of the region, the hospital in Vila Real joins it.
