Man accused of multiple rapes sentenced to 20 years in prison

The man accused of several rapes and other crimes, such as robberies, committed against 11 victims, in the city of Guimarães, district of Braga, was today sentenced to a single sentence of 20 years in prison.

In reading the ruling, the Guimarães Criminal Court (Creixomil) found “the vast majority of the facts” contained in the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) indictment to have been proven, considering that the defendant acted with “calculation”, despite the fact that, during the trial, he denied having committed the crimes – except for some robberies –, assuming a role of “victimization” and “minimization” of his actions.

The panel of judges applied to the defendant, in legal cumulation, the single sentence of 20 years in prison.

The defendant, who has been in preventive detention since August 30, 2023, was being tried for around a dozen episodes of rape or attempted rape carried out near the center of Guimarães, but also for other crimes, such as robbery, assaults on physical integrity, coercion or sexual coercion.

The defendant's targets were women, teenagers and young adults, and in one of the cases included in the Public Prosecutor's Office's indictment, the youngest victim was 12 years old and was approached by the defendant near the Multipurpose Pavilion, while the oldest, aged 68, was attacked on the Guimarães eco-track.

The other episodes described in the MP's indictment took place on the footpaths next to Guimarães Castle, on the footpaths next to Paço dos Duques, on the Guimarães eco-track, in Parque da Cidade and in Largo da República do Brasil.
