The Landal Health Center in Caldas da Rainha reopened this week after more than four years of closure, offering medical consultations one afternoon a week, on Thursdays, and administrative services on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. The reopening of the facility is part of the reorganization promoted by the West Local Health Unit (ULS), which also strengthened services at three additional centers in the municipality.
According to information sent to the City Council, the measure results from a reorganization of the Personalized Healthcare Units in Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, and Peniche. In the municipality of Caldas, the response has also been expanded to the centers in Alvorninha, Foz do Arelho, and Santa Catarina, which now have more consultation days than previously.
The Alvorninha center will now operate on Mondays and Wednesdays with medical and nursing appointments, and on Thursdays with only medical appointments. The Foz do Arelho center, which previously offered only one appointment per week, will now be open on Tuesdays and Fridays, providing medical and nursing care. The Santa Catarina center will offer medical and nursing appointments on Mondays and Thursdays, and only medical appointments on Friday mornings. On the remaining days, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, it will be open for administrative services.
The mayor of Caldas da Rainha, Vítor Marques, emphasized to Lusa the importance of this reorganization for a municipality where approximately 20,000 residents still lack a family doctor. "It's a very significant gain in the health care response here in the municipality, particularly in the parishes," he stated, recalling that an increase in consultations had been a long-standing demand of the government. "Fortunately, they have met the conditions to improve the service," he added.
Regarding the reopening of the Landal center, which has been closed since 2021, the mayor emphasized the importance of resuming services, even if this includes a few hours of video consultations. "It doesn't fully satisfy needs, but it does meet some needs," he acknowledged.
According to the ULS of the West, the differentiated services of Maternal Health, Child Health, Vaccination, Family Planning and Acute Illness/Day Consultation will continue to be provided at the municipal headquarters, given the need for specialized human and material resources and greater response capacity in the event of an incident.
In the case of Landal, the available resources are primarily intended for situations where travel to the headquarters is difficult and where nursing interventions are not required. The center will provide services through limited in-person consultations, video consultations, and administrative procedures, coordinated with the centralized services of the ULS do Oeste.
