Costa calls leaders' video conference on Wednesday after Macron-Trump meeting

The President of the European Council will organize a video conference on Wednesday with presidents and prime ministers of the European Union (EU) countries, to learn about Emmanuel Macron's visit to Washington.
“To prepare for the extraordinary European Council on March 6, I will organize a video conference with members of the European Council tomorrow [Wednesday] morning to hear from the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, about his recent visit to Washington,” wrote António Costa on social media.
The President of France and his counterpart from the United States of America (USA), Donald Trump, met on Monday in Washington DC.
The meeting took place on the third anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and was the main issue addressed.
Donald Trump has refused to call Russian President Vladimir Putin “a dictator,” but last week he called his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky “a dictator” without democratic legitimacy.
Footage broadcast from the meeting between the two presidents showed Donald Trump saying that all EU support for Ukraine was on loans: “Europe is lending the money to Ukraine.”
Macron corrected his US counterpart: “In reality, we paid 60% of the total effort and it was, just like the US did, with loans and grants, we provided real money.”
“This war has cost us all a lot of money, and it is Russia’s responsibility, because the aggressor is Russia,” added the French head of state.
Emmanuel Macron is the first European Union leader to visit the United States since the Republican took office, at a time when Washington DC and Moscow have begun preliminary negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine and an eventual peace agreement.
However, the meetings excluded the European Union and the invaded country.
After holding Ukraine responsible for the invasion of the Russian Federation, which began on February 22, 2022, Donald Trump said on Monday that he expects a visit from Volodymyr Zelensky to close a deal on sharing revenues from Ukrainian minerals.
On Sunday, the President of the European Council (former Prime Minister of Portugal) announced an extraordinary summit of leaders to discuss the war in Ukraine and the security of the European Union and the continent, in an attempt to reduce dependence on the United States of America, in the face of the White House's more aggressive stance, namely with threats of restrictions on imports from the community bloc.
