China resists Trump's tariffs and grows 5.2% in the second quarter

China 's economy grew 5.2% in the second quarter compared to the same period last year, exceeding projections made by surveys of financial market participants. Chinese consultancy Wind forecast 5.17%, and news agency Reuters, 5.1%.
The growth mainly reflects industrial production, which jumped 6.8% year-over-year. Retail sales, which reflect domestic consumption, grew 4.8%, dragging the overall result down.

The National Bureau of Statistics, which released the report at a press conference, assessed that the growth "demonstrating strong resilience and vitality" is due to the stimulus policies adopted by Beijing since the end of last year, in effect throughout the semester.
"However, there are many unstable and uncertain factors in the international environment, domestic demand is insufficient and the foundation for recovery and growth needs to be further consolidated," added the agency's deputy director, Sheng Laiyun, in an indirect reference to the tariff war initiated by US President Donald Trump .
