Summer is in full swing, but you can't sail. The famous Polish attraction has been suspended.
The reason for this situation is clear – the river is drying up rapidly, and its current level is too low. This isn't the first time this has happened during the summer holidays . Tourists and Warsaw residents are once again having to make do. Getting from one side of the Vistula to the other requires a pedestrian bridge or paid public transport, such as a bus.
Ferries on the Vistula River suspendedThese Vistula River ferries have been popular for years. During the summer season, they operate regularly along various parts of the boulevards, and admission is free. Even bicycles and pets are welcome on board, which only adds to the attractiveness of this mode of transport.
The Municipal Transport Authority announced the suspension of ferry operations.
"Despite our best intentions, the river dictates the terms and has once again decided to suspend ferry services. We apologize for the inconvenience," we read in a post published on the X platform.
For example, on Tuesday, August 12th, the water gauge on the boulevards showed only 35 centimeters. It could be even worse, as this year's record was a mere 11 cm on July 8th. Currently, the Wilga, Słonka, and Pliszka ferries are not operating until further notice.
This is sad news for many people vacationing on the Vistula River, especially since Vistula ferries were supposed to run more frequently starting Monday, August 11th. Instead, they are not running at all, and changes have to be expected. Poland is currently experiencing a heatwave. On Wednesday, August 13th, the thermometers in Warsaw are showing around 29 degrees Celsius, and it's expected to get even hotter. While this has its advantages—after all, you can finally go swimming after a wave of rain —it also has its disadvantages. Nature, above all, is suffering from the drought.
These ferry crossings are very popular. They connect the river banks at three points: Czerniakowski Headland – Saska Kępa (Słonka), Poniatowski Bridge – National Stadium (Pliszka), and Podzamcze Fontanny – Zoo (Wilga). During the summer, cruises run daily until evening, usually every half hour.
