Julia Szeremeta defeated Valeria Arboleda Mendoza and advanced to the final of the world championship in the 57 kg weight category
On her way to the semifinals, Julia Szeremeta had to defeat two opponents. She had a bye in the first round due to seeding. In the second round, she defeated China's Yan Cai. The quarterfinals proved more challenging, as Kazakh Karina Ibragimova proved to be a formidable opponent. However, the judges ultimately awarded the victory to the Polish player.
This success secured the Polish boxer at least a bronze medal, but Szeremeta dreamed of bigger goals. However, to reach the final, she had to defeat Colombian Valeria Arboleda Mendoza. The Colombian doesn't have a long resume, as evidenced by the fact that she lost to Ibragimova at the World Championships in Belgrade, organized by a rival federation. The Kazakhstani defeated the Colombian 5-0.
In Liverpool, however, it was Arboleda who reached the medal round, while Ibragimova escaped unscathed. And the South American fighter was very close to earning a title shot. The first round was very difficult to judge, as both women were sizing each other up. The punches were few, with Arboleda landing slightly more. However, Szeremeta was more decisive, and according to the four judges, she won that part. In the second round, the Pole was more active, although her attacks lacked proper coordination. In the final moments, however, the Colombian attacked Szeremeta furiously and landed several powerful punches. They made little impression on the Pole, and the judges were equally unimpressed. Four of them again favored the Pole. As a result, three of the scorecards showed the Pole winning 20-18, while two were tied. This result allowed Szeremeta to fight for survival in the third round. The Polish fighter tried to avoid a warning and a knockout, knowing she might even lose that part of the fight. And she did, but that didn't change the final score. Szeremeta won 3-2 and advanced to the grand final.
In it, she will face Indian Jaismine, who has not had much success so far. At the last Olympics, she was eliminated in her first bout. The fight will take place tomorrow at approximately 9:30 PM. The broadcast will be available on Polsat sports channels.
