A huge tragedy at the World Games! An athlete died shortly after his start.

A devastating tragedy struck during the World Games in Chengdu. Four days after competing in an orienteering competition, Mattia Debertolis died at the age of 29.
The cause of his death has not been made public. However, it is known that four days earlier, he was found unconscious in a forest about 50 km from Chengdu while competing in the men's middle-distance final. The temperature that day exceeded 30 degrees Celsius.

The 29-year-old was transported to the hospital and treated. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and doctors were unable to save his life.
The organizers of The World Games Chengdu 2025 and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) announced the athlete's death.
"Despite immediately providing him with professional medical assistance at one of China's leading medical facilities, he died," the statement read.
The competition in Chengdu will last until August 17.
