Hermès is worth its weight in gold. These luxury handbags are leading the way on the resale market.

As economic uncertainty becomes commonplace, luxury is taking on a new face. The pre-owned bag market is growing faster than new sales—and Hermès remains the undisputed king of the scene.
Just a few years ago, purchasing an Hermès Birkin or Kelly bag was synonymous with extravagance and an exclusive lifestyle. Today, it's increasingly considered an investment. According to data from the Reklaim platform , which sells over 1.2 million used handbags monthly, customers are buying them more and more consciously—with an eye not only on fashion but also on wealth diversification.
“ Customers are looking for something timeless that will maintain or increase its value over time,” emphasizes Richard Ramirez , Vice President of Purchasing at Reklaim, in an interview with WWD. “Purchasing handbags from brands like Hermès or Chanel has historically provided stable returns, and today it represents a creative and safe alternative to traditional forms of capital investment.”

A valuable accessory doesn't have to be out of reach either. More and more people are abandoning boutiques run by corporations like LVMH and Kering and turning to the secondary market. In good second-hand shops or online platforms such as Reklaim or Vinted , designer handbags can cost 15% less than in boutiques, and some even half as much.
At the same time, however, Hermès handbags have their own rules – Birkin and Kelly bags often sell for more than their retail price, and their final value depends on the vintage, color, and material. As a result, the secondary market democratizes access to luxury on the one hand, and enhances its prestige on the other.
Second-hand luxury. The numbers speak for themselves.According to the latest Bain-Altagamma Luxury Goods Worldwide Market Study , the secondhand luxury goods market will reach €48 billion in 2024 – a 7% increase from the previous year. Experts describe it as an "entry point" for customers who dream of a designer accessory but aren't ready for the boutique price tag.
Interestingly, the holiday season may bring a slight shift in trends. Ramirez predicts that while Hermès and Chanel will maintain their leading positions, brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, and Saint Laurent will see increasing interest – all thanks to gift seekers who prioritize a combination of recognizability and affordability.
Which luxury handbags are most often purchased on the secondary market?Hermès models dominate the second-hand bestsellers list:
Birkin 25,
Birkin 30,
Mini Kelly , but right behind them are the Chanel classics – Small and Medium Double Flap – and the immortal Speedy 25 from Louis Vuitton.
They are complemented by: Saint Laurent Downtown Cabas, Gucci Ophodida Shoulder Bag and Goyard Saint Louis PM.
