As a reminder, new, more effective tests have been added to the list of free tests funded by the National Health Fund (NFZ) under the "Cervical Cancer Prevention" program. Patients can now get tested for HPV free of charge, including oncogenic types, which are the main cause of cervical cancer. Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is also available – a more modern and accurate diagnostic method than traditional cytology.
HPV HR test – helps detect the strains of human papillomavirus (HPV 16 and 18) that cause cervical cancer
Liquid-based cytology – is more accurate and allows for a better assessment of the health of the cervix.
These tests will allow for more effective detection of cancerous changes at an early stage. The study will target women aged 25-64.
Work on the regulation – as indicated by the Ministry of Health – was carried out in close cooperation with experts in the field of gynecology, gynecological oncology and pathomorphology.
Fighting the HPV virus not only saves lives, but also offers the opportunity for significant financial savings for healthcare systems around the world.
According to the report "The Economic Burden of HPV: The Benefits of Preventing HPV Infections", vaccination against HPV is highly cost-effective - preventing the diseases caused by it is much cheaper than treating them.
According to the report, in Poland the approximate estimate of the total costs related to HPV, based on available data from several sources, is approximately 135 million euros per year (approximately 578.9 million PLN in 2024)
The economic burden of HPV-related disease highlights the crucial role of effective preventive strategies, including vaccination and screening programs, in mitigating both health and financial consequences
