Will Coal Prices Skyrocket? It All Depends on One Thing

- The situation on the heating coal market is currently rather stable.
- With the arrival of colder weather, demand for coal will increase, which may translate into an increase in the price of the raw material, representatives of companies selling coal estimate in an interview with WNP.
- More calorific coal with higher parameters is more expensive.
The prices of heating coal are currently in the range of approximately PLN 1,200-1,800 per tonne and depend on factors such as:
- type of raw material,
- its caloric value,
- location of coal storage (depending on the region of the country, raw material prices may vary slightly),
- sale of raw material in bulk or bagged (we will pay more for packed raw material).
- The most money has to be spent on good quality coal with a high calorific value - the head of a company from Upper Silesia that deals in coal tells the WNP portal.
Overall mining is falling, which also means less production of coarse coalsAs for prices, the weather will influence them. If it gets cold, they'll probably go up. It's best to buy coal in the spring, because that's when it's cheapest," our source adds.
Nut and cube coal are currently at the upper end of their price range, also due to the relatively low supply on the market.
The Polish mining industry is shrinking year by year. Overall production is declining, which also means lower production of coarse coal. Hence, the reliance on imported raw materials.
The market has stabilized recently. It's estimated that around 3.5 million homes in Poland use coal for heating. It remains an important fuel for households.
This is especially true given that in many regions of the country, especially rural areas, access to gas or heating networks is significantly limited or even impossible. The alternative, such as a heat pump or pellet boiler, is prohibitively expensive for many families.
Our annual demand for heating coal is approximately 6 million tons. Our annual demand for heating coal is approximately 6 million tons. With declining production by domestic coal companies, we also need to import the raw material , primarily from Kazakhstan and Colombia.
- If the weather turns out to be capricious and it gets cold, demand will increase, there will be more traffic on coal storage facilities, which may also mean pressure on the price of the raw material - says a representative of a Małopolska company that sells coal in an interview with WNP.
