Pakistan announces retaliation after accusing India of attacking military bases
The Pakistani strikes targeted Indian military installations, including the Pathankot air base, a BrahMos missile depot in Punjab state, and an air force base in Udhampur. Explosions were reported in those areas. Blasts were also heard in the city of Srinagar. Regional police reported five civilian deaths in the Jammu region of Kashmir.
Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan's minister for planning, development and special initiatives, said the attacks were aimed solely at military targets and were aimed at avoiding civilian casualties. India has put the states of Punjab, Haryana and Kashmir on heightened alert, with residents ordered to stay indoors and a blackout in many places. Iqbal also said the escalation was a test for the international community.
