Asteroid 2024 YR4 Was Supposed to Hit Earth. New NASA Data: Moon Collision Threat Grows
Date created:
Late last year, astronomers discovered a new asteroid, 2024 YR4. Initial analyses suggested that there was a 3 percent risk that the object could hit Earth in 2032. This information raised concerns, but the latest calculations by NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) almost completely rule out such a possibility.
After two months of intensive research, scientists have significantly reduced the probability of a collision. ESA estimates it at 0.001 percent, and NASA at 0.0027 percent. In practice, this means that the asteroid will almost certainly pass our planet on December 22, 2032, and will not pose a threat for another hundred years.
Asteroid 2024 YR4 under observationWhile Earth is not in imminent danger of destruction, there is a small risk for the moon. NASA’s current calculations put the chance that 2024 YR4 will hit our natural satellite at 1.7 percent, up from a previous estimate of 0.8 percent. Experts will continue to closely monitor the object’s trajectory.
Scientists analyze the trajectory of asteroid 2024 YR4The asteroid, which is between 40 and 90 meters in diameter , is under constant observation by astronomers. In March, the James Webb Telescope will conduct detailed analyses that will allow for a better determination of its size and properties.
While 2024 YR4 initially topped the list of potentially Earth-threatening objects , the latest research is reassuring – at least for the next century. However, scientists emphasize that asteroid monitoring is crucial for early detection of potential threats.
