Painful farewell

We, six children, stand around my mother's bedside, who will pass away in a few hours after a year and a half in a nursing home. We are sad, but also accepting of the situation. Then the younger brother, who had been away for a long time, arrives, and the family is "complete." He naturally gets priority in being close to his mother. He looks serious and sits down on the bed with her. There's no real reaction; he looks even more worried and says, "You can tell she's in pain." To which his older brother replies, "Do you mind if you sit on her leg?"
