Trump furious with judges after scrapping levies: 'Backroom scammers'
US President Donald Trump has slammed the court that ruled most of his import tariffs illegal, calling them "radical left-wing judges" who are "destroying" the United States.
The Court of International Trade ruled that Trump has no authority whatsoever to impose global tariffs on almost any country. Trump’s administration immediately appealed, and the decision was stayed.
Trump then launched an attack on his own social media platform Truth Social. "The ruling by the United States Court of International Trade is so wrong, and so political! Hopefully the Supreme Court will reverse this horrible, country-threatening decision SWIFTLY and DECISIVELY," Trump wrote.
'Backroom fraudsters'He goes on to call it a "horrible decision" to block his tariffs. "Backroom con artists" cannot be allowed to destroy our nation!" he writes. "This decision is being applauded by every country worldwide except the United States. Radical left-wing judges, along with some very bad people, are destroying America."
This is not the first time that Trump has publicly attacked the US judiciary. A worrying development, say critics, who fear that the White House may soon ignore the judiciary. Especially since several federal judges have declared Trump's decisions illegal and blocked them in recent months.
Trump clearly sees it differently. According to him, judges have no say in his trade policy. "If this were allowed to stand, it would completely destroy presidential power - the presidency would never be the same!", the president states.
