Fashion brand Gerry Weber will continue to exist: 8 stores reopen after run on clearance sales
The Dutch branch of women's fashion chain Gerry Weber, which went bankrupt at the end of last month, has managed to make a fresh start. A Spanish investor sees a future in the brand, and is reopening eight stores in the Netherlands after the clearance sale proved to be very successful.
The Dutch bankruptcy was largely the result of the major financial problems at the German parent company. In the Netherlands, the company was actually quite successful.
In recent weeks, the chances of a complete restart of Gerry Weber Netherlands rapidly diminished as more and more of the 38 Dutch stores closed their doors. Now, at the last minute, a new party is stepping in. The Spanish Victrix Group, known for the fashion brand Punt Roma, is buying the brand rights and is also taking over a number of clothing designers from Gerry Weber.
The Spanish company is breathing new life into the fashion brand, and is doing so in collaboration with De Naura Groep (Van Uffelen Mode, Claudia Sträter and Expresso) as operator. The eight stores that they will reopen 'in the foreseeable future' are located in Eindhoven, Nijmegen, Dordrecht, Nieuwegein, Zoetermeer, Venray, Middelburg and Veenendaal.
The new operator will take over at least thirty employees who already worked at Gerry Weber before the forced closure, the parties involved reported in a press release.
Curator Marc van Zanten says he is happy with the partial continuation of Gerry Weber. According to him, it became clear just after the bankruptcy how popular the women's fashion brand is in the Netherlands. "Sales reached record heights, while the organization was bankrupt. In my long career as a curator, I have never experienced buying new items to meet the demand in the stores."
