The hiking route that will take you to Mars while in Catalonia

Despite being millions of kilometers from Earth, the reddish landscapes of the "Red Planet" amaze everyone, although on the globe you can also visit places similar to those on Mars. In fact, you don't even have to leave Spain to do so, since in the province of Tarragona there is an equally impressive place also characterized by such striking red hues: the Pla de l'Areny.

This Martian landscape is located just a short distance from the town of Montroig, one of the most historic in the Bajo Campo region, and is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary natural environments to explore in Catalonia. To do so, you can complete a magnificent hiking route that runs through its most stunning corners, making it a perfect weekend getaway.

The incredible route through the Pla de l'Areny near Montroig

This circular route, just two kilometers long, begins at one of Montroig's architectural gems, the Santuario Mare de Déu de la Roca, and from there, follow the yellow signs that guide trekking enthusiasts through this sublime Tarragona landscape. Shortly after starting the route, hikers will come across the first point of interest on the route, Cova Foradada.

After peering into the small cavern, you must continue the tour down a flight of steps known as the Devil's Stairs to finally reach Pla de l'Areny. This enclave is as striking for its curious geological formations as for their color, so it's no wonder many venture to complete this short itinerary to see them with their own eyes.

Despite the short distance of the route, meandering through this sublime natural area is an unforgettable experience, as the views along the way are breathtaking. Once you've completed the route, you can always take the opportunity to explore the wonderful town of Montroig, home to several architectural treasures that complement the excursion perfectly.

This incredible natural area is located just over half an hour by road from the city of Tarragona. To get there from the Catalan city, first take the A-7 , then briefly take the T-323 and continue on the T-322. Finally, take the road that leads to the chapel's parking lot.
