Leonel and Danilo are criticized for not starting the border wall.

Amid calls for dialogue to address the consequences of the Haitian crisis and the intensification of deportations , Senate President Ricardo de los Santos criticized former presidents Leonel Fernández and Danilo Medina on Tuesday for not having initiated construction of the border wall with Haiti during their respective administrations.
"If, in their 20 years, they had made the decision , if they had had the courage that Luis Abinader had to say 'yes, I'm going to build that wall ,' they would have started it 20 years ago," the legislator said.
De los Santos believed that both political leaders should participate in the national dialogue convened by President Luis Abinader, given that they led the country for two decades during which, he said, the same migration problems faced today already existed.
He also recalled that the parties they represent were absent from a previous attempt at dialogue convened by the current government.
The legislator praised President Abinader's decision to convene all sectors, starting with former presidents, to seek joint solutions to the crisis in Haiti as a wise move .
In this regard, he affirmed that irregular migration is not a recent phenomenon, but rather a problem that the country has endured for decades and that requires a national, not a partisan, response .
He emphasized that during the current administration, significant investments have been made in equipping the Armed Forces and strengthening immigration controls.
He asserted that the Dominican Republic has given everything to Haiti, but that "it no longer has anything to offer without putting its own stability at risk."
Finally, he responded to the call of the president of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), Carlos Hernández, regarding respect for human rights in deportations , stating that the country complies with its protocols and that each State has the right to implement its immigration policy .
His statements come at a delicate time for the Dominican Republic , which has decided to strengthen its immigration policy against Haitians in an irregular situation, even deploying agents to hospitals to deport Haitian women in labor after they receive medical care.
