Trump to end trade talks with Canada over TV ad

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday he will end “all trade negotiations” with Canada over a television ad criticizing U.S. tariffs, which he said misrepresented the facts and called “egregious behavior” intended to influence U.S. court decisions.
Trump's social media post came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he aims to double Canada 's exports to countries outside the United States due to the threat posed by Trump's tariffs.
The U.S. president's call to abruptly cancel all negotiations could escalate trade tensions with Canada , which have been building for months.

WHAT DOES TRUMP SAY?
Trump posted: “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada fraudulently used an ad, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.”
"The ad cost $75,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the United States Supreme Court and other courts," Trump wrote on his social media platform.
Trump 's post emphasized that "tariffs are critical to the national security and economy of the United States. Based on their atrocious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are terminated."

Carney 's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The prime minister was scheduled to leave Friday morning for a summit in Asia, while Trump is scheduled to fly out Friday evening.
Hours earlier, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute posted on social media site X that an ad created by the Ontario government “misrepresents the 'Presidential Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade' dated April 25, 1987.” It added that Canada had not received permission from the foundation “to use or edit the comments .”
The foundation said it is “weighing its legal options in this matter” and urged the public to view an unedited video of Reagan’s speech.

EU-CANADA NEGOTIATIONS
Canada , unlike other US allies, has yet to seal a deal to halt Trump's trade war.
Carney met with Trump a few weeks ago to try to ease trade tensions, as the two countries and Mexico prepare to review the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which Trump negotiated during his first term but has since distanced himself from.
More than three-quarters of Canadian exports go to the United States, and nearly $3.6 billion (US$2.7 billion) in goods and services cross the border every day.
Oral arguments are scheduled for the Supreme Court on November 5th regarding legal challenges to a significant portion of Trump 's tariffs, including the country-specific tariffs that are central to both Trump's foreign policy and economic agenda.

Ontario aired the ad during one of the MLB American League Championship Series games between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners. Fox Sports, which broadcast the game, said more than 9 million people watched it.
The president has taken steps to impose steep tariffs on many Canadian goods. The Canadian government imposed retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. goods last April, but made exceptions for some automakers to bring a certain number of vehicles into the country, known as remission quotas.
Trump 's tariffs have particularly hit Canada 's auto sector, much of which is located in Ontario . Stellantis announced this month that it would move a production line from Ontario to Illinois .
