On irregular immigration, the Democratic Party is the most troubled left in Europe

The fight against illegal immigration, often organized by gangs of smugglers or criminal organizations, is becoming an element of cohesion between the various European governments, not only the center-right, indeed . The British Labour Party, as well as the Danish and German Social Democrats (on this in full agreement with the CDU-CSU) have announced in recent weeks various forms of inclusion of immigration regulations (in Great Britain also on legal immigration). The Italian Democratic Party, on this issue, limits itself to hunting for errors with respect to the government, insists on demonizing the center in Albania, agreed with a socialist prime minister who expresses his appreciation towards Giorgia Meloni in even embarrassing ways.
Elly Schlein must overcome the limits of occasional propaganda, which is also ineffective, and find a way to provide serious proposals on the fight against illegal immigration and on how this objective can be concretely pursued, naturally in compliance with human rights, but without concessions to traffickers. If the policies of the majority on this ground do not convince her, if she thinks that it is not enough or not useful to seek bilateral agreements with the countries from which the main migratory flows depart, she must indicate other paths, make other requests, as long as they are clear and understandable. Remaining in the no man's land of generic statements against illegal immigration accompanied by permanent support for the sabotage of some sectors of the judiciary to the actions of the government, which today appear to be aligned with those of the major European governments, condemns the Democratic Party to irrelevance, on an issue on which there is a lot of attention among the electorate, especially among the most popular classes. The alternative is built on proposals that are different and even divergent from those of the current majority, but clear and credible. In the absence of these, only opposition is exercised and one is condemned to continue to exercise only this function, which is not exactly the best.
