Rossi (Lega): The shortage of places in RSAs is intolerable.

Arezzo, September 12, 2025 – Rossi (Lega): The shortage of places in nursing homes is intolerable.
Statement by Federico Rossi, Group Leader and Secretary of the Arezzo Section
In recent years, due to the progressive aging of the population, nursing homes have become full, often with very long waiting lists and exponentially increasing costs. In all of this, families are shouldering the burden of the needs of the most vulnerable, thus finding themselves faced with increasingly burdensome costs to ensure their family members have accommodations in a nursing home and the care they need.
In Tuscany, as of December 2024, 345 nursing homes were active, with a total of 16,118 beds, of which 14,851, or 15.3 per 1,000 elderly people, are dedicated to the non-self-sufficient (92%). Approximately one in three facilities is publicly owned. The coverage rate for non-self-sufficient beds available and fundable by the Regional Health Authority (SSR) for Tuscans over 64 is 1.49%.
These data outline a system in serious difficulty, to which the Region continues to respond with sporadic interventions and no long-term vision. The system, therefore, is unsustainable and seriously jeopardizes the region's socioeconomic stability.
Regarding the elderly, who therefore require greater care and assistance, Tuscany's government should commit to allocating adequate funds to ensure an essential service, creating synergies with the private sector to build new facilities. Restructuring the service itself is essential, with the possibility of introducing new forms of intermediate care, which could include intermediate care services and integrated home care, as has been requested by the Arezzo municipal administration for years.
Unfortunately, the Regional Council and President Giani, instead of seriously investing in healthcare and assistance, continue to accumulate ever-increasing debt while providing increasingly poor services. This management penalizes citizens and shifts the costs onto families, demonstrating once again the Region's inability to provide concrete responses to the real needs of Tuscans.
To date, hundreds of people do not have access to nursing homes, making the continuation of this problem intolerable.
Our elderly have the right to have the opportunity to benefit from the services of RSA."
