Farewell to Diego Benecchi, a life dedicated to politics

Bologna, May 10, 2025 - Farewell to Diego Benecchi. He was 73 years old and was one of the leaders of the Bologna '77, then a protagonist of the political and civil life of Bologna, very active in the world of school (he was a teacher for a long time) and for three terms city councilor .
Born in Domodossola, but raised under the Two Towers, a member of Lotta Continua, he also ended up in prison after the events that led to the killing of the militant Francesco Lorusso , who marked that season of struggle, and to whose memory he has always remained tied.
In a move that created deep discussion among the left in Bologna, he joined the Democratic Party of the Left and was a city councilor from 1990 to 2004.
From 1990 to 1995 he was deputy group leader of the Due Torri Group for Bologna, from 1995 to 1999 president of the "Territorial Planning and Environment" commission and from 1999 president of the "General and Institutional Affairs" commission.
He was active in the civic life of the city as long as his illness allowed him to.
“A life dedicated to politics, starting from high school and in the political movements of the city,” recalls Mayor Matteo Lepore, “and then to the institutions and to our city that he had chosen as his own, always close to young people and the world of school.”
"An exponent of the institutions and a personality of great human depth – recalls the PD deputy Andrea De Maria -. With him there were truly many moments of meeting and collaboration. I was always struck by his passion and his intellectual clarity".
