Woman found stabbed to death in home, son arrested

A 22-year-old man was stopped by the Carabinieri, who is believed to be responsible for killing his 60-year-old mother with stab wounds at dawn this morning in Montepiano , a hamlet in the municipality of Vernio (Prato), and for setting fire to the house where they lived together .

Carabinieri and firefighters intervened after an alarm was raised due to the presence of heavy smoke coming out of the house. The flames were put out in a few minutes: once inside the house the firefighters themselves noticed the lifeless body of the woman on the ground.

The investigators' attention immediately focused on the 22-year-old, deaf-mute. The prosecutor on duty was also on site.
