From May 24th to June 1st, Ancona will be a meeting place for 4000 athletes from all over Italy, who will participate in the 78th edition of the National University Championships to compete in 16 official disciplines and 9 optional ones chosen by the organizing committee. An event of extraordinary importance for the Doric capital just one month after the Erasmus Generation Meeting that brought thousands of students of over 40 nationalities to the city. The Championship, which will award 450 medals, was presented yesterday and was organized by CUS Ancona , the Municipality of Ancona and the Polytechnic University of Marche . All under the organizational direction of FederCUSI, with the patronage of CONI, the collaboration of the National Sports Federations and the contribution of ANCI Marche. "This event would not have been possible - said the rector Gian Luca Gregori - without the very strong cohesion between all the institutions involved. Sports and study together with socializing and sharing experiences are positive and enriching elements, fundamental for our students".
The event will start on Sunday 25 May with the parade of athletes along Corso Garibaldi and end in Piazza Pertini where the official inauguration will take place in the presence of the Ancona foil champion Serena Rossini, gold medalist at the 2023 Universiade. The students will compete in the following disciplines: 11-a-side football, 5-a-side football, women's and men's volleyball, men's basketball, athletics, judo, karate, wrestling, 7-a-side rugby, fencing, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, clay shooting, paddle tennis, beach volleyball, 3 vs 3 basketball, chess, Western gymkhana, working riding, road running, climbing. Disciplines that will be held in all the city's sports facilities.
In Piazza Pertini, a Championship village will be set up with a space of about 600 square meters and an auditorium with 60 seats and a video wall for conferences, seminars and themed meetings such as the one on May 28 with Panathlon Ancona. There will also be a point where the stories of students who have a dual career, sports and university, will be told. "It is an honor to host this event in Ancona - said the Councilor for Youth Policies Marco Battino - for the first time in our city. Ancona will be worthy of this event". For the occasion, the Municipality will set up, in Piazza Pertini, a stage for musical performances, to be held on the evenings of the Championships and the closing scheduled for May 31. "The Region - emphasized the Regional Councilor for Sport Chiara Biondi - supports these Championships because it strongly believes in the educational and formative value of sport".
