Bayern Munich reclaims Bundesliga crown, Harry Kane ends trophy drought

Bayern Munich will not have relinquished their throne for too long. After being deprived of a twelfth consecutive German football championship title by Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 , the Rekordmeister is guaranteed to finish the Bundesliga season in first place in the standings, despite their spectacular draw on Saturday, May 3, at Leipzig (3-3). With two league matches still to be played, the Munich club can mathematically no longer be caught by their rivals, after the draw (2-2) of Xabi Alonso's men on Sunday in Freiburg.
Restoring this national dominance was an "extremely important" objective for the Bavarians, right-back Josip Stanisic insisted in recent days. Stanisic added: "It's the most noble title, because you have to win it over 34 matches." This is a source of consolation, two weeks after Bayern's elimination in the Champions League quarter-finals by Inter Milan (1-2 in the first leg, 2-2 in the return).
Bayern could have celebrated their 34th league title in history – their 84th in all competitions – in front of their home crowd on Saturday, April 26, after their 3-0 victory against Mainz. But at the same time, Leverkusen had to not win against Augsburg, which was not the case (2-0). The Allianz Arena will therefore have to wait until the reception of Borussia M'Gladbach on Saturday, May 10, to celebrate its heroes.
This title is also a great way for one of the club's most iconic players, Thomas Müller, to end his adventure with Bayern, whose youth system he joined at the age of 10, in the summer of 2000. The midfielder announced, in a letter to supporters posted on social media on April 5, that his current contract, which expires in June, would not be renewed.
At the age of 35, he won a new trophy for his 501st Bundesliga match in Bavarian colours. Quite symbolic. In the history of the German league, only three other men have surpassed this mark in the jersey of the same team: Charly Körbel (602 matches for Eintracht Frankfurt, 1972-1991), Manfred Kaltz (581 matches for Hamburg SV, 1971-1989, then 1990-1991) and Michael Lameck (518 matches for VfL Bochum, 1972-1988).
“Exemplary at all levels”However, it is 31-year-old striker Harry Kane who is attracting attention. Suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card of the 2024-2025 season on April 26 against Mainz, the England captain is enjoying his first-ever title. While he has been considered one of the best in the world in his position for years, the Briton had not yet won a single trophy in his career, after fifteen professional seasons. Named seven times Premier League player of the month, three times top scorer in the English league, and once in the Bundesliga, the former Tottenham player (435 matches played, 280 goals), who arrived in the Bavarian locker room in the summer of 2023 , had come close to adding a first-line goal to his collective list of achievements on several occasions... without success.
"Nobody deserves this championship title more than [him], believes Uli Hoeness, Bayern's honorary president. During these two seasons, he has been exemplary at every level: he scores an incredible number of goals [80 goals in 89 matches in all competitions], he works for the team." He had also expressed, in recent weeks, the importance that putting an end to this drought held for him: "There are people who only talk about the fact that I haven't won a title yet. It would be good to silence them once and for all." This has now been done.
