At the US Open, Naomi Osaka eliminates Coco Gauff in the round of 16

Japan's Naomi Osaka eliminated world number 3 Coco Gauff on Monday in the main match of the round of 16 at the US Open in New York. The former world number 1, who won in New York in 2018 and 2020, won 6-3, 6-2 against the 2023 winner, and will face Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk ( 28th ) or Czech Karolina Muchova ( 13th ) for a place in the last four.
Osaka is enjoying her best Grand Slam run at Flushing Meadows since returning to the WTA Tour in early 2024 after giving birth to a daughter. The four-time major champion advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal since the 2021 Australian Open on Monday and the fifth of her career. Since the start of her career, the 27-year-old Japanese has consistently won every major tournament, reaching the quarterfinals.
Gauff, for her part, is coming off a mixed Grand Slam season: eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, the 21-year-old American won her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros before disappearing in the first round at Wimbledon.
In New York, the world number 3 was beaten by the world number 79 , Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, in the first round, before breaking down in tears during her second round against Croatian Donna Vekic. The American then recorded a much more convincing victory (6-3, 6-1) in the third round against Poland's Magdalena Frech.
