When divisions on the left threaten the metropolitan majority in eastern Lyon

Lyon Capitale continues its overview of the 14 metropolitan constituencies. This October, we focus on eastern Lyon, where the outcome of the next majority could be decided and where divisions on the left are opening up space for the Republicans.
This Rhône Amont constituency, which encompasses the northeast of the metropolitan area, is shaping up to be one of the most undecided. It is one of the few that is not politically homogeneous. Vaulx-en-Velin, the largest commune, is a left-wing bastion, first communist and now socialist. Décines-Charpieu and Meyzieu have shifted to the right under the impact of development in eastern Lyon, which has led to a sociological renewal more favorable to the Republicans. The constituency could even lean very far to the right. In July 2024, Tiffany Joncour was elected MP for a constituency that encompasses part of Rhône Amont, with the exception of Vaulx-en-Velin. The RN could therefore play the role of referee in the second round, depriving the Republicans of a potential reserve of votes, as in 2020.
