Every minute, 60 animals are slaughtered for Lyon

According to L214, 189 million animals have been killed "for Lyon" since 2020. The association is calling on Mayor Grégory Doucet.
Since the start of the municipal mandate in 2020, nearly 189 million animals have been killed to feed the inhabitants of Lyon, according to estimates by the L214 association. It illustrates this figure with striking comparisons: 100,000 animals slaughtered every day, 60 per minute. According to L214, it would only take 16 hours to fill the Groupama Stadium with that many slaughtered animals.
To raise awareness among passersby, volunteers will set up a "human counter," displaying in real time the number of animals slaughtered for local consumption since 2020. The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Place de la Comédie (1st arrondissement).
L214 is calling on elected officials and candidates in the 2026 municipal elections to sign its “Save the Century” charter, which aims to halve the number of animals killed for food in France. Proposed measures include a daily vegetarian option in school cafeterias and the exclusion of products from intensive livestock farming in public procurement, the inclusion of a target to exclude products from fish farming, a significant plant-based offering in buffets at official receptions, and a target of reducing the consumption of animal products by 50% by 2032.
According to the association, if Lyon reached this goal, nearly 18 million animals could be saved each year, or more than 100 million over a municipal mandate.
For Mila Sanchez, L214's campaign manager: " The number of animals killed to feed Lyon's residents continues to rise every moment. Faced with this massacre, local elected officials have decisive power. Grégory Doucet has powerful levers at his disposal to help achieve a 50% reduction in the number of animals killed to feed the city. With such a goal, he could help save 107 million animals over the next six years! This is precisely what L214 is proposing with the Rescue of the Century charter: we call on the mayor to commit without further delay by signing it! "
