A gunman opened fire Wednesday on five police officers in Pennsylvania, killing three and seriously wounding two, the assailant also being dead, the police chief of the eastern US state announced.

"Five law enforcement officers were shot today, three fatally," Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris said at a televised news conference. He said the other two officers were injured and taken to the hospital in "critical but stable condition." The shooter was struck by police gunfire and also died, he added.

"Tragic day"

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in Codorus, York County, about 115 miles west of Philadelphia. Police officers were responding to a domestic violence investigation when they were shot.
