Rick Davies dies: What did the Supertramp singer die of?

Singer and songwriter Rick Davies passed away at the age of 81 this Friday, September 5, 2025, at his home on Long Island. "The Supertramp Partnership is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Supertramp founder Rick Davies (...) We had the privilege of knowing and performing with him for over fifty years. We offer our sincere condolences to Sue Davies," his wife, the band's statement said. "He was the voice and pianist behind Supertramp's most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock history."
"Rick was known for his warmth, resilience, and devotion to his wife, with whom he shared five decades," the tribute also reads. "Rick's music and legacy continue to inspire many and are a testament to the fact that great songs never die, they live on," the statement concludes.
Ten years of fighting the diseaseRick Davies founded Supertramp in 1969 with guitarist Richard Palmer, drummer Robert Millar, and singer-bassist Roger Hodgson. They later collaborated with Dougie Thomson, Bob Siebenberg, and John Helliwell to form the band's lineup from 1973 to 1983. The band's songs include "Give a Little Bit and Breakfast in America," "The Logical Song," and "Take the Long Way Home." In 1982, Roger Hodgson left the band to go solo, but the band continued on its way until 1988. In total, the group has sold no fewer than 70 million records.
Rick Davies' health problems gradually prevented him from continuing to tour with Supertramp. He did, however, perform with his childhood friends under the name "Ricky and the Rockets." The English artist died after battling multiple myeloma, a hematological cancer, for more than a decade, according to the official statement from Supertramp. "Rick's music and legacy," the statement added, "continue to inspire many and are a testament to the fact that great songs never die, they live on."
