Afores report historic capital gains of 608.5 billion pesos

Retirement fund administrators (Afore) reported historic capital gains of 608.5 billion pesos in the first seven months of 2025, according to the National Commission for the Retirement Savings System (Consar). This figure represents a 169% increase compared to the same period last year, when the total amount was 225.9 billion pesos.
The amount also exceeds the capital gains reported at the end of 2024, which reached 556.758 billion pesos, and is the highest historical record since Consar began tracking the Afores.
In July, the Afores posted profits of 74.3 billion pesos, marking the third consecutive month of positive performance , following losses of 31.6 billion pesos in April. Although July saw a 10.06% contraction compared to June, when profits reached 84.5 billion pesos, it remains an outstanding performance for the year.
The president of Consar, Julio César Cervantes Parra, noted that these capital gains reflect the strength of the retirement savings system, which manages nearly 70 million individual accounts with resources equivalent to 7.5 million pesos per account.
Despite international uncertainty caused by U.S. tariff policies, the Mexican economy showed growth in the second quarter, and the Bank of Mexico's interest rate was adjusted to 7.75% following a recent 25-basis-point cut.
In addition, unemployment benefits withdrawals from pension fund managers (AFORES) during the January-July period totaled 21.8 billion pesos, another historic high , reflecting both the growth in capital gains and the protection of workers from adverse employment situations.
The record performance of the Afores demonstrates the strength of the Mexican financial system and its ability to generate sustainable returns for workers' savings, even in a complex international economic environment.
