A massive bank closure is coming to Mexico: what you need to know

The National Banking and Securities Commission ( CNBV ) confirmed the exact date for the sixth mass bank closure in Mexico in 2025 , a measure that could affect millions of financial services users in the country.
However, authorities clarified that this is not a crisis or a negative situation in the sector, but rather a scheduled break in observance of an official holiday . And La Verdad Noticias tells you all the details.
The closure will occur on Tuesday, September 16 , the day commemorating Mexico's Independence Day. During that day, bank branches will remain closed and will not offer customer service at the counter or in offices.
Service will be restored to normal on Wednesday, September 17, so users should plan ahead for payments, transfers, and other procedures that require direct attention.
Despite this suspension of operations , the CNBV guaranteed that ATMs will continue to operate normally, as will each bank's digital platforms and mobile apps, allowing for seamless access to cash and basic transactions.
The closure will affect all financial institutions, with the exception of Banco Azteca, which remains the only financial institution not participating in these mass closures, as it provides service 365 days a year.
The CNBV also announced that after September 16, the banking sector will experience four additional closures during the year:
- Monday, November 17, for the commemoration of November 20.
- Friday, December 12, Bank Employee Day.
- Thursday, December 25th, Christmas Day.
- Make payments or deposits before September 16.
- Using ATMs and mobile apps during the lockdown.
- Schedule SPEI transfers in advance if they involve different banks.
- Take into account business days for transactions with government agencies or payroll payments.
With these measures, customers will be able to avoid setbacks and take advantage of the digital services that banks will maintain during the closure.
